About the University
Kazan Federal University (KFU) invites you to take part in the Summer University project, which will be held from July 6 to 19, 2026, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
Kazan Federal University is one of Russia's oldest classical universities, with a history spanning over two centuries, founded in 1804 by Emperor Alexander I. Lev Tolstoy and Vladimir Lenin studied here, and outstanding minds advanced science within its walls: Nikolai Lobachevsky created non-Euclidean geometry, Karl Klaus discovered ruthenium, Alexander Butlerov developed the theory of chemical structure of organic compounds, and Ivan Simonov led the scientific work of the expedition that discovered Antarctica.
Today, KFU is one of Russia's ten federal universities and ranks among the country's top 10 higher education institutions. The university successfully bridges its great past with the technologies of the future, training top-tier professionals and conducting research at the forefront of global science and business: biotechnology, oil and gas extraction, new materials, and chemistry.
Located in the heart of the largest metropolis on the Volga, where Eastern and Western cultures harmoniously intertwine, KFU strengthens Russia's research and educational potential and maintains partnerships with over 300 universities worldwide. 13,000 students from 100 countries study in Kazan and at KFU's international branches in Uzbekistan and Egypt. KFU students live on modern campuses and enjoy a dynamic calendar of events — from academic forums and creative festivals to sports competitions.

KFU's central campus is located in the historic heart of Kazan. Most of KFU's institutes are situated here. The core of the campus is the main building in the 19th-century Russian classical style with an inner courtyard, home to the Anatomical Theater, the university library with its unique collection of rare books and Eastern manuscripts, and the Astronomical Observatory, which houses one of Russia's oldest astronomy departments. The university's priceless heritage includes 12 museums spanning various disciplines, some of which you will be able to visit during your stay in Kazan.
A tour of thousand-year-old Kazan awaits you. You will discover where the legendary cauldron — the "kazan" that gave the city its name — "boiled without fire," and where the countless treasures of the Kazan khans are said to be hidden. You will visit the Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the symbol of Kazan — the famous "leaning" Söyembikä Tower, the majestic Qolşärif Mosque, and the Annunciation Cathedral, standing just steps apart as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of Islam and Orthodox Christianity.
You will venture beyond Kazan on a journey to the town of Bolgar, the ancient capital of Volga Bulgaria, where Islam was adopted as the official state religion in 922. The unique architecture of this medieval Muslim city from the 7th to 15th centuries has survived to the present day and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The jewel of modern Bolgar is the White Mosque, reminiscent of the majestic Taj Mahal in India.
During your stay in Kazan, you will also visit a unique monument of Orthodox culture — the island-town of Sviyazhsk, built by Tsar Ivan the Terrible as the key to the conquest of Kazan in 1552.
All expenses related to the Summer University educational program and the stay in Kazan — including travel tickets, accommodation, meals, medical insurance, and transfers within the program — will be covered by the project organizers.
